Colorado Update
Hey Hey! Beka the doula here!
It’s been 9 months since I’ve moved to Colorado, I thought it’d be a great time to give y’all an update!
If you followed along on IG, I shared in my stories how difficult the move was for me. It was a difficult feeling to explain because I wasn’t “forced” to move because of a job/school, I moved because I wanted to.
And even though it was a conscious well thought out plan, it still hurt. It hurt leaving my big ol family at home. To leave the comfort. It hurt being so far away from everyone.
Of course the first couple of months were TOUGH! Naturally I went home to Texas 3 weeks after moving to celebrate my brother’s birthday. We went home for Thanksgiving. My in-laws came to visit & couple of our friends as well. Then my family came up for Christmas. Then my in-laws came back again a couple days after the new year. AND THEN… we actually went home for the whole month of January and a couple days into February. Jim and I got sick, there was a major fire here in Co & a winter storm. It was a lot of things all at once that drove the anxiety off the wall. But we were able to go home and spend time with our families. And our most recent trip back to Tx was at end of April.
Moving was a big thing, but having the ability to go home whenever we needed/wanted to has been such a blessing.
ON TO WORK LIFE HERE… Before I moved, I did get connected with doulas, so that was really great. I got to attend doula meet ups, and as you know I am SHY, so that was a challenge in itself, but in order to meet people and make my line of work work, I had to get out there!
In the beginning, I did quite a few back up doula births ( a back up doula is a doula that is available to go in when the clients primary doula is unable to attend). I had a couple “on call births” for a program that i’m part of. A client of my own. I also did a sibling doula home birth (which is a doula who takes care of the littles, distracts them then helps them be involved in the birth). That one was pretty cool, I call it Auntie Duties haha.
So the first couple of months being here in Co were really just getting my feet wet, trying to connect with other doulas, and managing my feelings.
JUNE & JULY are my first months that I am FULLY BOOKED with my own clients! I have 3 clients each month!!! My June families have all delivered! <Due dates of 17,18 & 29> annnnnd as you probably guessed, their delivery date were all over the place! (I’ll make a separate post on this). All families and littles are now home, healthy & striving! I’m truly so happy that this is my line of work and that I’m booked for these two months! If you’re in Colorado and have pregnant friends, send them my way!
On an adventure note, we’ve been able to explore a little more, this past week we finally got in the lake!!! We’ve been trying, buuuuut the wind has been strong and the water has been FREEZING! Summer in Co is a little different. But the heat is starting to pick up meaning more outdoor water activities!!
